Women’s Golf’s Welcomes Amaya Melendez – Eastern Michigan University Athletics

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – Eastern Michigan University Head Women’s Golf Coach Josh Brewer continues to build his roster for the 2024-25 season with the addition of senior Amaya Melendez  (Ann Arbor Mich./ Pioneer) today, June 20.

Melendez, a student at EMU for the past three years, joins the golf team after an impressive academic and athletic tenure. Recently, she reached the final four in the 108th Michigan Women’s Amateur Championship at Plum Hollow Country Club, notably defeating the defending champion. Her high school career at Ann Arbor Pioneer was marked by consistent excellence, earning all-state honors each year and leading her team to multiple state championship appearances. Additionally, she has served as an assistant golf coach at Ann Arbor Greenhills and organized a golf clinic for inner-city youth in Southeast Michigan.

“Amaya’s story shows how the entire Eastern family is on board with us making golf relevant at the national level,” said Brewer. “Scott Wetherbee, our athletic director, received a message about Amaya after she made it to the semifinals of the Michigan Amateur. Amaya has been a student at Eastern for three years; however, she has never competed for the Eagles. After speaking to her and listening to her story and desire to compete, I realized that she is exactly what we want from our student-athletes as members of the women’s golf program. Amaya can help us reach the postseason and create a story that even Disney might find hard to believe.”

She joins sophomore Savannah De Bock (Ecaussinnes-d’enghien, Belgium/Institut de l’Enfant-Jésus – Lycée/Georgia), who previously announced her commitment to EMU.
