Game and first set, Sun – Raducanu* 2-6 0-0 Sun
Ace.
Cheeky drop shot, lovely touch to mix it up. 30-0.
Loose forehand long from Sun. 30-15.
Ace – Emma thinks about the challenge but the umpire puts her hand out flat to imply it caught the line. Two set points…
Sun misfires on the first.
But then Raducanu has to go for broke and flashes a forehand past Sun at the net.
It is called out, confirmed by Emma’s challenge, and that is the first set to the very, very impressive Lulu Sun.
Work to do for Emma Raducanu.
Sun breaks – Raducanu 2-5 Sun*
Raducanu absorbs the pace well on the opening point but can do nothing about the crushing forehand return winner on a weak second serve for 15-15.
A crucial point at 30-30 goes Emma’s way, probing on the forehand and then producing a delicate backhand slice which skids on the grass and forces her opponent to net.
A bit of confusion at 40-30 when Raducanu’s ace actually clipped the net for a let and then her lob is called out but the crowd and Emma don’t hear it before the chair umpire says on the microphone – Raducanu challenges it but it was well long. Deuce.
Raducanu nets a plus-one backhand – her first shot after her serve – and it’s another break point…
A long rally, brilliant ball-striking from Sun but she eventually nets on the 18th shot.
A second break point comes up with another thrashing forehand winner – Sun’s 11th winner of the match already – but Emma saves it with a superb serve. Deuce.
Raducanu nails a big serve but then nets the forehand. A third break point…
This time Sun takes it in style. Raducanu tries to moon ball to try and take some of the sting out of the Sun shots – but the New Zealander comes in and whacks away a beautiful, powerful drive volley.
Raducanu* 2-4 Sun
Sun capitalises on a short Raducanu forehand to move in and place a forehand volley right on the line.
Big 112mph serve down the T does not come back.
A return then lands just long. 40-0.
Double fault. 40-15.
Better from Raducanu as she lets rip on that forehand – giving it the big grunt to match – and Sun relents by going wide.
But a tame Raducanu effort goes long and that’s the hold for Sun.
