Wild update on Luka Doncic’s new injury reveals scary severity amid Finals

Tomorrow night, the Dallas Mavericks begin the path to try to make history.

Dallas is now down 0-2 in this series after a Game 2 loss to the Boston Celtics on Sunday night, and now they have the chance to make this series a dogfight if they win Game 3. No team has ever fought back from being down 3-0, and if the Mavs can win tomorrow, there’s a chance they can go win this series.

Several things have to happen for the Mavs to change the tide in this series, and one of those things is the continued dominance of Luka Doncic. Doncic has been the best player in the series to this point, and his thoracic contusion didn’t seem to hold him back much in Game 2.

He may not have been moving as well as fans are used to seeing, but he still balled out. Doncic finished with a 32-point triple-double in that game, and although he was a little late for warmups and was seen having his rib area worked on before the game, he still had a good game.

No one knew the severity of Doncic’s injury before Game 2, and a new report reveals some scary severity for how much pain he’s in.

According to Tim MacMahon of ESPN, sources told him that “Doncic received a pain-killing injection before Game 2 to numb the area of his thoracic contusion.” MacMahon also reported that the “expectation is that Doncic will get another shot before Game 3.”

Doncic having to get injections in this area in order to be able to play shows how injured Doncic actually is, and it sounds like he is expected to have another injection before Game 3 tomorrow.

Doncic has been a trooper all playoffs long, and if this were the regular season, he likely would have been shut down for multiple weeks. No one wants this NBA Finals win more than Doncic, and as everyone knows, he’s always going to do whatever he can to play even when he’s injured.

He has been battling through a knee sprain and ankle soreness for the entirety of the playoffs, and he has been on the injury report for every single game. Doncic’s ability to battle through this severe pain has been remarkable, and maybe a couple of days of rest helped him get a little more burst before Game 3.

Doncic and the Mavs will look to get back on track tomorrow night at home, and a Game 3 win could change everything in this series.

For all the latest on Luka Doncic and the Dallas Mavericks during the 2024 NBA Finals against the Boston Celtics, stay tuned.
