Westview High School football coach Jamal Jones is under investigation and has been placed on administrative leave after allegedly slapping and shaking students at a football camp.

According to a report from the McMinnville Police Department, officers were called to conduct a “welfare check” at the campus on Tuesday at 4:30 a.m. The Westview squad and other teams had been attending the camp since June 22.

During the initial investigation, officers learned there had been an incident involving Jones allegedly waking up students early in the morning by shaking and slapping them while they were sleeping. The officers did not identify Jones by name, but added he is a police officer with the Hillsboro Police Department.

The McMinnville Police Department said the incident is under investigation to determine if there are any potentially criminal offenses. The Beaverton School District and the Hillsboro Police Department have placed Jones on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.

Jones is in his first year as coach at Westview after spending the previous season at Franklin High School in Portland. He was the head coach at Arcata High School in California for six years before coming to Portland.
