15:10 Beverley – Barley – 1pt @ 7/1

Barley was out of his depth in the York handicap won by Botanical a couple of weeks ago but has received another couple of pounds back from the assessors and runs at a much more suitable level. Reverting to a mile could also prove to be a positive, alongside running on a slower surface.

He shaped as if he was in good form on his seasonal return at Redcar, making a big move to get into the lead a couple of furlongs from home. The petrol tank ran empty afterwards and he finished in third, but he would have been entitled to need the spin after 170 days off the track.

Dropping back to a mile shouldn’t be a problem given the conditions, whilst I think Beverley’s track will suit. The draw could have been kinder but he’s unlikely to be in a rush early on and hopefully a workable position is attainable. Either way, at 7/1 or bigger, he can be a player in this grade.

17:15 Beverley – Kyber Crystal – 1pt @ 14/1

Kyber Crystal has a record of 1-26 and is clearly of limited ability. However, I backed her at Redcar on her seasonal return and thought she ran a decent race, hitting the line well having got too far back. She then ran at Hamilton but had her path blocked on multiple occasions.

It’s likely she’s in better form than that run would suggest and now that she has had a couple of spins to sharpen up, there should be no fitness excuses. Her basement mark is 6lbs below the one she defied last June, the ground is fine and the opposition are limited, so I’ll have a go at 14/1.
