Wednesday tab: Society is back at work, leads 8 graded winners

Society worked at Churchill Downs on Wednesday as she prepares to begin her 5-year-old campaign.

The Gun Runner mare breezed five furlongs from the gate in 1:00.6, second fastest of five at the distance.

Trained by Steve Asmussen, Society hasn’t had a start since finishing fourth in the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint in November, and she returned to the tab in April. She was 2-for-5 last year, with one of her wins coming in the Grade 3 Chicago.

Society was one of eight graded-stakes winners with published works Wednesday.

Society (Gun Runner), a Grade 1 winner (2022 Cotillion), worked five furlongs in 1:00.6 at Churchill Downs on Wednesday morning. It was the second fastest of five works at the distance. Her previous work was nine days ago going five furlongs at Churchill Downs. In her last start she placed fourth in the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint (G1) going seven furlongs on the main track at Santa Anita on Nov. 4 for trainer Steve Asmussen.

Next (Not This Time), a two-time Grade 2 winner (2023 Brooklyn, 2022 Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance), worked five furlongs in 1:02.0 at Turfway Park on Wednesday morning. It was the fourth fastest of six works at the distance. His previous work was eight days ago going five furlongs at Turfway Park. In his last start he won the Isaac Murphy Marathon Overnight going 1 1/2 miles on the main track at Churchill Downs on May 1 for trainer Doug Cowans.

Instant Coffee (Bolt d’Oro), a Grade 2 winner (2022 Kentucky Jockey Club), worked four furlongs in 49.4 seconds at Belmont Park on Wednesday morning. It was the 13th fastest of 72 works at the distance. His previous work was 30 days ago going five furlongs at Churchill Downs. In his last start he placed ninth in the Oaklawn Handicap (G2) going 1 1/8 miles on the main track at Oaklawn on April 20 for trainer Jose D’Angelo.

Planetario (Il Doge), a Grade 2 winner (2023 Hollywood Turf Cup), worked one mile in 1:42.0 at Santa Anita on Wednesday morning. It was the only work at the distance. His previous work was 10 days ago going six furlongs at Santa Anita. In his last start he placed third in the Charles Whittingham (G2) going 1 1/4 miles on the turf at Santa Anita on May 4 for trainer Richard Mandella.

Wynstock (Solomini), a Grade 2 winner (2023 Los Alamitos Futurity), worked four furlongs in 48.4 seconds at Santa Anita on Wednesday morning. It was the sixth fastest of 34 works at the distance. This was his first work since his last race. In his last start he placed sixth in the Desert Code going 6 1/2 furlongs on the turf at Santa Anita on May 19 for trainer Bob Baffert.

Joey Freshwater (Jimmy Creed), a two-time Grade 3 winner (2024 Runhappy, 2023 Bay Shore), worked five furlongs in 1:02.4 at Belmont Park on Wednesday morning. It was the eighth fastest of 14 works at the distance. This was his first work since his last race. In his last start he won the Runhappy (G3) going six furlongs on the main track at Belmont at the Big A on May 11 for trainer Linda Rice.

Like the King (Palace Malice), a Grade 3 winner (2021 Jeff Ruby Steaks), worked five furlongs in 1:01.6 at Woodbine on Wednesday morning. It was the fifth fastest of nine works at the distance. His previous work was seven days ago going four furlongs at Woodbine. In his last start he placed seventh in an allowance race going one mile on the turf at Gulfstream Park on April 27 for trainer Mark Casse.
