“We won’t be able to play T20 cricket the way we want in New York”: Rahul Dravid reacts to challenging pitch

Rahul Dravid knows about the challenges his team will have to counter when they play against Ireland in New York. The Men in Blue will start their ICC T20 World Cup 2024 campaign on June 5.

The pitch and the outfield at the newly constructed venue is unfit for the shortest format of the game. The International Cricket Council has compromised the quality of cricket just to promote the game in the United States of America.

In the game between Sri Lanka and South Africa, the batters failed to hit regular fours as the ball was stopping in the outfield. The sub-continent team was bowled out for 77 runs in 19.1 overs. The Proteas won the contest by 6 wickets but they took 16.2 overs to complete the target.

Dravid talked about playing according to the situation. “We won’t be able to play T20 cricket the way we want in New York. We will have to respect the situation and conditions. The score of 140 will be a good total. We have experience batters in our side and they can take us to a good score.

“You can’t go out there and play strokes from the first ball of the match. It is not going to be easy but we can certainly handle things,” Rahul Dravid said.

He refused to reveal whether Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma will open the innings. “Rohit, Yashasvi and Virat are three opening options. Virat did well for RCB as an opener in the Indian Premier League 2024. We will take a call on match day,” he added.
