Waukee Northwest, Wahlert Catholic win Iowa boys state tennis team titles

On Friday, two state champions were crowned at the Iowa high school boys state tennis team tournament.

Waukee Northwest took home the title in Class 2A while Wahlert Catholic earned the victory in Class 1A.

The Wolves came through with a sweep of Pleasant Valley, 5-0, to walk away with the Class 2A team state title on Friday. The matchup didn’t even need to get to doubles play, with Northwest earning five straight singles points to claim the win.

Kaden Taylor, Kellan Croatt, Jake Nelson, Sean Sonoiki and Drew Fenton all won their matches in straight sets.

Pleasant Valley finished its season in second place and Iowa City West earned bronze after a dramatic 5-4 win over Linn-Mar in the third-place matchup.

The Eagles earned their title in a hard-fought battle with Xavier, pulling off a tight 5-3 victory. Everything was knotted up at 3-3 following the conclusion of singles play. The doubles matches were where the Eagles took control.

The No. 2 doubles pairing of Cal Martineau and Jensen Hill claimed a victory in straight sets, 7-5, 6-2. The No. 3 doubles team of Evan Anderson and Chase Miller earned the point that would put the Eagles over the edge. They won in straight sets as well, 6-4, 6-1.

On the singles side, Martineau, Anderson and Miller each claimed points to help Wahlert go into the doubles rounds tied with Xavier.

Xavier finished with the silver medal while Pella earned third place as a team by defeating Waverly Shell-Rock, 5-1, in the bronze medal matchup.
