Ace India batter Virat Kohli finally laid his hand on the ODI Cricketer of the Year award, days before India’s opening game at the T20 World Cup. He was nominated for the accolade alongside his teammates Shubman Gill, Mohammed Shami and New Zealand’s Daryl Mitchell. Kohli emerged as the eventual winner taking into account the votes of fans and the expert panel of the International Cricket Council.
Notably, Kohli had a marvellous outing in ODIs last year, scoring runs at a stunning average of 72.47 with six centuries and eight fifties to his name.
Kohli received his award ahead of India’s warm-up fixture against Bangladesh in the T20 World Cup. He became the first player in the history of cricket to win the coveted award on three occasions surpassing former India captain MS Dhoni and AB de Villiers’ feat of winning it twice.
ICC shared a video on its social media handles of Kohli posing with the trophy and the ODI team of the year cap as he participated in the pre-tournament photoshoot.
Kohli had a phenomenal year with the bat in ODIs last year, finishing as the second-highest run-scorer in 2023. He scored 1377 runs from 24 innings at a stunning average of 72.47.
Kohli had a record-breaking 2023 ODI World Cup as he registered the most number of runs in a single edition of the tournament. He scored 765 runs from 11 innings at an average of 95.62!
During the first semi-final of the marquee event against New Zealand, Kohli broke the record for most centuries in ODIs registering his 50th hundred as he left behind his idol Sachin Tendulkar. But although he was prolific with his run-scoring and managed to score a half-century in the final as well, India finished runners-up, losing to Australia.
Kohli will once again look to set the T20 World Cup on fire with his marvellous batting performances. He is the leading run scorer in the history of the tournament with 1141 runs to his name from 25 innings at an average of 81.5!
