Redesigned last year, the BMW X1 adds a new M35i higher-performance variant for 2024.

The third-gen X1’s chunky styling adorns a slightly larger form.

Among the design elements specific to the M35i are an enlarged lower air intake, extended side skirts, and a rear diffuser with quad exhaust outlets.

Like the X1 xDrive28i, the M35i uses a turbocharged 2.0-liter engine paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic and all-wheel drive.

Whereas the standard xDrive28i makes 241 horsepower, the M35i corrals an additional 71 ponies for a total of 312. Both have the same 295 pound-feet of torque, however.

In our testing, the X1 M35i scooted to 60 mph in 4.7 seconds, 0.7 second ahead of the xDrive28i.

The M35i also comes with an M-tuned suspension with adaptive dampers and a limited-slip front differential, making it handle slightly better.

High-backed M Sport front seats are available.

As in the xDrive28i, a digital instrument cluster is standard, as is a large central touchscreen. We weren’t entirely enamored of the latest operating system, however.
