Victor golf course makes list of top public courses in NY

The sun is shining in Western New York, making it the perfect weather to grab your clubs and hit the golf course. Are you looking to find a good course in Ontario County?

Golfweek’s Best 2024 just released their top rankings for best public golf courses in each state, and Ravenwood Golf Club in Victor placed 11 out of 15 for rankings in New York. Here is what you need to know.

Ravenwood Golf Club

Open since 2002, Ravenwood Golf Club is an 18-hole course in the heart of the Finger Lakes Region with bent grass tees, greens, and fairways, according to the club’s website. The Golf Club has hosted many USGA & PGA qualifiers along with the Home of the 2003 & 2009 New York Men’s Amateur Golf Championships.

Director of Clubhouse Operations, Jennifer Gossage, said the club is thrilled to be in Golfweek’s top rankings and that attendees can expert new renovations within the year.

“We have an extraordinary year ahead as we unveil our newly renovated clubhouse and introduce our stunning year-round restaurant, Nine Two Nine Bar and Grill,” Gossage wrote in an email. “Featuring an indoor-outdoor bar and a picturesque outdoor patio with fire pits, all overlooking our magnificent golf course, we offer the best of both worlds: the exclusivity of a semi-private club with the warmth of welcoming the public.”

Gossage said the restaurant will open up to the public in July.

Ravenwood is described as a full-service golf facility with PGA-certified golf instruction for golfers of all ages and a practice facility.

According to Ravenwood’s website, the club also has a 3000-square-foot banquet facility that is open year-round and said to be ideal for weddings, special events, corporate meetings, and banquets.

Summer rates range from 29 to 86 dollars depending on the day, time, and whether you decide to walk or ride in a golf cart. Membership options are available, though limited. Green Fees range from 3000 to 3550 dollars for individuals, 4,200 to 5,125 for couples, and 2,500 to 3,050 for individual juniors or seniors (junior is under 29 years of age; senior is 65 or older). It is 750 dollars to add a child (anyone under 24 years old) to your membership.

The course also offers Junior camps starting the first week of July through August.

The practice range opens at 6:30 a.m. on weekdays, sunrise on weekends, and stays open until sunset most nights.

You can visit their website for membership applications and more information on the course.

How do Golfweek’s ratings work?

According to Golfweek, their ratings are calculated by the input of over 800 raters worldwide. These golfers play different courses and rate them based on 10 provided criteria, each based on its own 10-point scale. The raters then give each course an overall rating of one to 10, separate from the provided criteria. Golfweeks Best calculates the average of every overall rating to create an annual score for each layout.

The 10 provided criteria include:

  1. Routing
  2. Integrity of design (classic courses only), or Quality of shaping (modern courses only)
  3. Overall land plan
  4. Greens and surrounds
  5. Variety and memorability of par 3s
  6. Variety and memorability of par 4s
  7. Variety and memorability of par 5s
  8. Tree and landscape management
  9. Conditioning and ecology
  10. “Walk in the park” test

Golfweek notes that there are never any perfect 10 ratings; only eight courses worldwide on the top 2024 lists were rated above a 9.

An average rating above 8 indicates an incredible golf course. According to Golfweek, anything above 7 is considered worth traveling great distances to experience, and courses with an average rating of 6 to 7 can be considered the best in most cities.
