Vero Beach’s Mason Cisco headlines TCPalm’s 2024 Boys Tennis All-Area Team

A pair of area boys tennis teams marched to district titles this past spring.

And while one squad cruised to supremacy in its district, the other enacted some revenge en route to raising its trophy to the sky.

With the District 14-3A title on the line in 2023, Sebastian River was turned back in a tie-breaker loss to South Fork. However, behind a win from senior Kai Edwards at first singles, the Sharks returned the favor with a 4-3 victory one year later.

Meanwhile, it was business as usual for Vero Beach, as the program extended its long streak of district titles. The Indians later rolled to a regional semifinal sweep of Windermere before losing to Lake Nona in the Region 4-5A Final.

Not to be overlooked, Jensen Beach sprang out of the gates and didn’t let up through the regular season as the team entered district play with a 15-0 mark. No area team won more matches than the Falcons.

Sebastian River, Vero Beach and Jensen Beach are well represented in the 2024 TCPalm’s Boys Tennis All-Area team. See who else landed on the squad and was recognized.

Player of the Year

Mason Cisco, Vero Beach

Year: Senior

Highlights: Last season, Cisco shared POY honors with doubles partner Bo Johnson. This year, the Indians senior stands alone as the area’s best player as he concludes his prep career with three consecutive district singles and doubles titles. In singles action, Cisco stacked up wins in his first 16 matches before falling in the quarterfinal round of the Class 4A main draw. He also teamed with Walter Lloyd as the duo made a run to the state semifinals. Cisco finished 2024 with a combined record of 26-4.

Coach of the Year

Mike Hickey, Vero Beach

Highlights: Two seasons at the helm, two COY awards for Hickey. The Indians’ head coach earned a repeat of the area’s top coaching honor despite losing numerous contributors from previous state-bound teams. But that didn’t slow down Vero Beach, which went undefeated against local competition and finished with a 13-3 record. The Indians’ only defeats came at the hands of a pair of 4A state qualifiers: Buchholz and Lake Nona.

Boys Tennis All-Area First Team

Spencer Belville, Jensen Beach

Year: Senior

Highlights: Like the Falcons, Belville didn’t have a blemish during the regular season. The senior went 6-0 at second singles and 8-0 at third singles while rolling to an undefeated mark playing primarily at No. 2 doubles.

Sebastian Chen, Jensen Beach

Year: Senior

Highlights: Chen was another veteran near the top of the Falcons lineup. Slotted primarily at the No. 2 spot, the senior had a 9-3 record in singles play. He also teamed with Jayden Dyer for an under mark of 12-0 at No. 1 doubles.

Dylan de Windt, Martin County

Year: Senior

Highlights: Two years removed from being named Co-Player of the Year, de Windt ends his prep with back-to-back selections to the All-Area team. The senior was a force for the Tigers, losing just twice in 16 matches at No. 1 singles while going 8-5 at No. 1 doubles.

Jayden Dyer, Jensen Beach

Year: Sophomore

Highlights: One year after serving as Lincoln Park Academy’s top player, Dyer added to the Falcons’ depth and quality at the top of the lineup. The sophomore returns to the All-Area team following a 12-2 mark at No. 1 singles and 13-1 record at No. 1 doubles.

Kai Edwards, Sebastian River

Year: Senior

Highlights: Edwards spearheaded the Sharks’ run to the District 14-3A title as he was the district champion at No. 1 singles. He later won a match in the Class 3A main draw before bowing out in the quarterfinals.

Robert Fino, Sebastian River

Year: Senior

Highlights: Fino was one-half of a senior tandem who competed in the Class 3A doubles bracket. He played alongside Edwards en route to a 9-1 mark at No. 1 doubles while going 10-5 at No. 2 singles.

Walter Lloyd, Vero Beach

Year: Junior

Highlights: Finishing 18-5 overall between singles and doubles, Lloyd was one of multiple Indians to enjoy breakout seasons. Most of his work was done at No. 4 singles, where he was 7-2. He also won a district title at No. 1 doubles with Cisco as the duo advanced to the 4A state semifinals.

Dillon Marsh, South Fork

Year: Junior

Highlights: The junior captained a Bulldogs squad that finished with an 11-6 record and was second in District 14-3A. Marsh earned district runner-up honors at No. 1 singles, where he was 9-6 overall. He also had a winning record (7-4) at No. 1 doubles alongside Tyler Kappler.

Joseph Rodolico, Vero Beach

Year: Junior

Highlights: This past season was a campaign of growth for Rodolico, who went from occasional appearances a year ago to becoming a fixture at the top of the Indians’ lineup. Playing primarily at second singles and second doubles, the junior compiled a combined record of 19-10.
