Value Scope: Each way horseracing tips from Steve Jones for Royal Ascot on ITV
Our man is hoping Arctic Thunder can cause an eruption in the Britannia Handicap, the mile long dash on day three of the royal meeting and has picks for three other races
The weather has been glorious at Ascot this week but I forecast Thunder this afternoon.
ARCTIC THUNDER (5.05) goes in the Britannia Handicap and this big-field dash down the straight mile looks an ideal race.
He broke his duck on the all-weather at Kempton in January before having the misfortune to bump into subsequent 2000 Guineas winner Notable Speech at the same track a month later.
It was to his credit he was able to win over 7f at Ascot last month. He pulled way too hard off a slow pace but still battled on well to beat two in-form rivals.
The likely fast pace and step up to a mile should be perfect. Have 2pts each-way at 28-1.
SIYOLA (3.45) has ground to make up on hot favourite Diamond Rain in the Ribblesdale Stakes but there’s reasons why she could get an awful lot closer than the three-and-a-half lengths she was beaten at Newbury last month.
She challenged towards the unfavoured far side and she is going to improve for stepping up a quarter of a mile in distance. Have 1pt each-way at 14-1. Most bookies are paying out on four places.
Aidan O’Brien has a good record in the King George V Stakes.
He sends out three runners in this year’s race – including likely favourite Chantilly – but I’d rather chance AUTUMN WINTER (3.05).
He finished in front of Chantilly when runner-up at Leopardstown in November and he is sure to have taken a big step forward for his return to action.
Racing on fast ground for the first time will also help a great deal. Have 1pt each-way at 20-1. A few bookies are paying six places with Sky Bet going seven.
GORAK (6.15) finished in midfield in this race 12 months ago but he was first home of the stands’ side group.
That was his first run after finishing fourth in a Haydock Group 3 that saw him rocket up the weights.
He’s taken time to come back down but his two Newmarket efforts this season suggest he’s found his level.
It was a good effort to split Carrytheone and Divine Libra in a thrilling finishing at Newmarket last month, especially as he took a hefty bump when the race got serious. Have 1pt each-way at 28-1. Most bookies are going six places with Sky Bet stretching to seven.
