Value Scope: Each way horseracing tips from Steve Jones for Royal Ascot on ITV
Doom is the headline pick in the Duke of Cambridge Stakes on the second day of the royal meeting and he has three other suggestions from elsewhere on the card
There’ll be no gloom with DOOM (3.45) in the Duke Of Cambridge Stakes.
It took her six starts to get off the mark and she was even beaten at 1-25 in a two-horse race last season but she really kicked on last autumn.
She bolted up in a fast-ground Redcar maiden before landing a 7f French Listed race on a much softer surface at Fontainebleau.
Conditions were again soft for her comeback run in a Group 3 at the Curragh in May and she ran another sound race over 7f.
That trip looks on the sharp side for her these days, so stepping up to a mile should help.
The switch to fast ground could also be key. Her mum, Breeders’ cup heroine Dank, loved quick ground and there’s a good chance Doom will enjoy the fast conditions. Have 2pts each-way at 14-1.
THUNDER BALL (5.05) has plenty of form in competitive big-field handicaps and that will serve him well in the Royal Hunt Cup.
He ran a cracker when fourth in the Britannia Stakes at this meeting last year and he went on to run a solid race from an unhelpful draw in the Cambridgeshire at Newmarket.
In-form Paul and Oliver Cole’s runner wasn’t disgraced in either the Lincoln or Newbury’s Spring Mile earlier in the season and the drop to 7f was no good to him at Newmarket last month. Have 1pt each-way at 40-1. A couple of bookies are paying out on seven places and Sky Bet is stretching to eight.
Unexposed HOPEFUL (5.40) has all the tools needed to land the Kensington Palace Stakes.
She travels well, is a strong stayer at this mile distance and looks to be improving.
The fast ground is just what she wants and the likely sound pace will be right up her street. Have 1pt each-way at 16-1. Plenty of bookies are going six places with Sky Bet offering seven.
Aidan O’Brien looks to have a strong grip on the Queen’s Vase as he attempts to equal Sir Henry Cecil’s record eight wins in this Group 2 prize.
Ryan Moore has picked Illinois from the four Ballydoyle runners but I prefer GROSVENOR SQUARE (3.05).
He found the tight turns against him when third in the Chester Vase but he shapes like a smart stayer in the making. Have 2pts win at 10-1.
Royal Ascot kicks off on Tuesday, June 18, and runs to Saturday, June 22, 2024. Tickets are out right now on Ticketmaster, and you can get yours here.
