Unicorn Party takes over Market Square
Belleville’s Market Square was painted in pastel today as nearly 200 unicorn-horned people gathered to celebrate the beginning of pride month.
Bay of Quinte Pride organized the event in cooperation with 14 downtown businesses. Participants went on a scavenger hunt, searching for unicorns hidden in stores in order to qualify for a prize draw. After the hunt, participants gathered at Market Square to try and break the world record for the most people gathered wearing unicorn horns.
While a final total of 194 people was counted, the world record stands at 344.
Chair of the Quinte Pride committee, Lynn Olsen, said the event was a big success.
“Everybody here is very chill, and I do see that a lot at pride events. Everybody’s chill,” said Olsen. “Everyone’s just happy to be a part of it. They’re happy to be there. They’re having a good time, making some new friends, meeting us. We’re meeting them. It’s a good day.”
The unicorn party kicks off Pride Month celebrations in the region, with flag-raising ceremonies in Quinte West and Belleville set for tomorrow, and the Belleville Pride Parade coming up this Saturday.
