Interior health is monitoring the Grand Forks area after a single case of tuberculosis was reported.
A news release stated Interior Health’s Communicable Disease Unit will be conducting contact tracing in Grand Forks, but are unable to provide any details about the individual for privacy reasons. The health authority will be following up with those believed to be exposed to the case as they are identified. Affected individuals will be directly notified and screened for the infection. Depending on screening results, those exposed will be offered treatment that prevents active tuberculosis.
There is no increased risk to the general public from this case, the release stated. Tuberculosis cannot be spread through casual and brief interactions such as visiting retail outlets or in outdoor settings. Follow-up of TB cases is the routine work public health does to reduce transmission of disease.
The province averages about 27 cases of tuberculosis per month and Interior Health averages about 15 confirmed cases per year. For every case, processes are in place to follow up with anyone potentially impacted.
