Tiger Woods ex golf coach makes bold statement ahead of The Open
Tiger Woods’ former golf coach Hank Haney believes it’s The Open rather than The Masters that represents the 15-time major champion’s best chance to ever win again on Tour.
Haney was Woods‘ coach from 2004 to 2010, a stretch that saw him win six major titles.
The duo split a few months after revelations about Woods’ private life broke in 2009.
In 2012, Haney told of how he regretted how his relationship with Woods soured.
Taking to X / Twitter ahead of this week’s 152nd Open Championship at Royal Troon, and Haney admits he likes what he sees from the former World No.1.
Woods, 48, is competing in just his fifth tournament all season this week.
Other than finishing dead last of those that made the cut at The Masters, Woods withdrew from the Genesis Invitational and missed the cut at both the US PGA and US Open.
But Haney fancies a change of fortune for three-time Open champion Woods this week, especially back on links turf as it should play to his strengths.
While many people in the game consider The Masters at Augusta National represents Woods’ best chance to win again, Haney disagrees and thinks it’s The Open.

Haney tweeted:
“A lot of people thought Augusta was Tiger’s best chance to ever win again, it’s wasn’t, it was always the Open Championship for multiple reasons, he can hit shots like this, slower greens mean fewer 3 putts and no one has more knowledge about playing links golf. Based on what he’s done so far this year it’s kind of looking like now or never. His swing looks really good in practice.”
Woods spoke to the media ahead of The Open on Tuesday.
He hit out at Colin Montgomerie, who last week claimed he should retire from the sport.
