Thursday tab: Dornoch fires a bullet + 11 other graded winners

In his first work since winning the Belmont Stakes, Dornoch fired a bullet Thursday morning at Saratoga, breezing four furlongs in 48.2 seconds on the training track.

Trainer Danny Gargan said after the race that the next start for the Good Magic colt could be the Jim Dandy (G2) or Haskell (G1) on his way to the Travers (G1).

Dornoch, a full brother to 2023 Kentucky Derby winner Mage, entered the Belmont after finishing 10th in this year’s run for the roses. He closed 2023 with a win in the Remsen (G2) and opened 2024 with a win in the Fountain of Youth (G2), followed by a fourth-place finish in the Blue Grass (G1).

He was one of 12 graded-stakes winners with published works Thursday.

Pretty Mischievous (Into Mischief), a three-time Grade 1 winner (2023 Test, 2023 Acorn, 2023 Kentucky Oaks), worked four furlongs in 49.4 seconds at Churchill Downs on Thursday morning. It was the sixth fastest of nine works at the distance. This was her first work since her last race. In her last start she placed third in the Ogden Phipps (G1) going 1 1/8 miles on the main track at Saratoga on June 8 for trainer Brendan Walsh.

Muth (Good Magic), a two-time Grade 1 winner (2024 Arkansas Derby, 2023 American Pharoah), worked five furlongs in 1:02.4 at Santa Anita on Thursday morning. It was the fastest of three works at the distance. His previous work was 17 days ago going four furlongs at Santa Anita. In his last start he won the Arkansas Derby (G1) going 1 1/8 miles on the main track at Oaklawn on March 30 for trainer Bob Baffert.

Alva Starr (Lord Nelson), a Grade 1 winner (2024 Madison), worked four furlongs in 51.6 seconds at Delaware Park on Thursday morning. It was the only work at the distance. This was her first work since her last race. In her last start she won the Rehoboth going six furlongs on the main track at Delaware Park on June 5 for trainer Brett Brinkman.

Bran (Muhaarar), a Grade 2 winner (2022 Turf Sprint), worked five furlongs in 1:01.2 at Santa Anita on Thursday morning. It was the fifth fastest of 17 works at the distance. His previous work was seven days ago going five furlongs at Santa Anita. In his last start he placed second in the Eddie D (G2) going 6 1/2 furlongs on the turf at Santa Anita on Sept. 30 for trainer John Sadler.
