It came from Dirk Nowitzki, the former NBA MVP and one of the greatest German athletes of all-time.

It came after Nowitzki, the former Dallas Mavericks star, admitted to cheering for the Dallas Stars in the Western Conference final of the National Hockey League.

But once Draisaitl’s Edmonton Oilers knocked off the Stars, he chose country over city.

“I got a message from Dirk,” said Draisaitl, with a large smile on his face. “That was really nice. I think he was cheering for the Stars. But he’s still rooting for me a little bit, I think.”

Draisaitl is a proud German who wants to see hockey grow in his homeland.

“Maybe he can help,” said Draisaitl.
