PARIS (Kyodo) — Japan’s Yoshihito Nishioka and Nao Hibino both went out in the first round of the French Open on Monday.

Nishioka, 70th in the men’s world ranking, went down to 21st-ranked Felix Auger-Aliassime of Canada 6-2, 6-4, 6-4 at Roland Garros, failing to replicate a run that saw him reach the last 16 last year.

“I couldn’t find my way past his serves. It wasn’t easy to get on the attack,” said Nishioka, who did not have the best of preparations due to a high fever and stomachache as he exited a Grand Slam in the first round for the fourth straight tournament.

Hibino, 96th in the women’s ranking, was beaten by 80th-ranked Bernarda Pera of the United States 6-2, 6-0.

Fourteen-time men’s tournament winner Rafael Nadal of Spain, who has hinted at retirement at the end of the season, lost to fourth seed Alexander Zverev of Germany 6-3, 7-6(5), 6-3.
