TCU Primed for Wimbledon Run – TCU Athletics

FORT WORTH – The stage is set for a quartet of TCU men’s tennis All-Americans on the hallowed grass of the All England Club.

The Gentlemen’s Singles and Gentlemen’s Doubles draws for The Championships, Wimbledon 2024 were unveiled on Friday, and tantalizing matchup possibilities abound for Horned Frog fans alike.

Cam Norrie headlines TCU’s pair of singles competitors. Norrie, making his seventh career appearance at Wimbledon, draws No. 67 Facundo Diaz Acosta of Argentina in the first round.

A Norrie victory likely pits the lefty vs. British No. 1 and 28th-seeded Jack Draper in round two. Norrie surpassed Andy Murray as the British No. 1 in October 2021 and held the position for nearly three years before surrendering the status to Draper on June 17.

Norrie’s path through the bracket includes a potential third round tilt with No. 4 seed Alexander Zverev, whom he engaged in a five-set thriller in the fourth round of the 2024 Australian Open, and subsequent battles vs. the likes of No. 11 Stefanos Tsitsipas and No. 13 Taylor Fritz.

Occupying the same half of the bracket is Jake Fearnley, who was awarded a wild card into the main singles draw after winning the Rothesay Open Nottingham men’s singles title. Just five weeks removed from leading TCU to its first NCAA Championship, Fearnley faces Spain’s Alejandro Moro Canas in the opening round.

Should Fearnley knock off Moro Canas, No. 189 in the ATP rankings, he’ll have a date with one of the greatest players the sport has seen. On the other half of Fearnley’s opening round quadrant is 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic. Fearnley will join Norrie as one of two TCU alumnus to battle Djokovic, who has claimed seven Wimbledon titles, with an opening round triumph.

In doubles, Fearnley and fellow 2024 ITA All-American Jack Pinnington garnered main draw wild cards. The duo squares off with the Brazilian tandem of Rafael Matos and Marcelo Melo.

Pinnington arrives in London fresh off receiving a wild card onto the qualifying singles draw. He knocked off Norrie in the round of 16 of the Rothesay Open Nottingham men’s singles bracket.

On standby in doubles is Reese Stalder. The world No. 73, Stalder is on the alternates list. Stalder was in the same position in 2023. He eventually found his way onto the main draw and won two matches to reach the round of 16.

Norrie will be playing in his 27th career Grand Slam. He holds a 32-26 combined career record in Slams and is 9-6 at Wimbledon. Norrie reached the semifinals of the 2022 Wimbledon Championships on his way to achieving a career-high ATP ranking of No. 8.

Fearnley won an opening round doubles match at Wimbledon in 2023.

Pinnington joins Fearnley as two of three active players in program history to compete at Wimbledon.

TCU is one of only four programs with multiple players competing in the Gentlemen’s singles main draw alongside Illinois, South Carolina and UCLA.

Singles matches begin on Monday, with the opening round of doubles play set to commence on Wednesday.

The complete gentlemen’s singles and gentlemen’s doubles draws along with match times can be accessed on Wimbledon.com.

All Wimbledon matches will air live on ESPN and ESPN+ domestically.
