Jack Nicklaus talks about the most challenging courses and why he likes them
Golf legend Jack Nicklaus talks about the most challenging courses and why he likes them. He spoke June 4, 2024 at his Memorial Tournament in Dublin
If golf is your thing, and you are looking for a really great excuse to load up the clubs and head to the course, here are two good reasons happening this summer. I would join you but I am more of a putt-putt kind of girl, so I will opt for showing my support in a different manner.
Camp Wildcats Golf Scramble
The fourth annual Camp Wildcats Golf Scramble is just over a week away. Camp Wildcats is a weeklong day camp offered to students in pre-kindergarten through eighth grade who live in the Woodmore School District and who qualify for special education services. The camp combines fun and learning with recreational and educational opportunities for the students.
The scramble will be a shotgun start at 8 a.m. Saturday, June 15, at HIdden Hills Golf Course, 4900 County Road16. The cost to participate is $300 per team or $75 per individual. There will be raffles and prizes as well as on-course contests such as closest to the pin, longest drive and more. Lunch is included in the registration fee.
Organizers are looking for sponsors for the camp and the scramble. Sponsorship opportunities include gift baskets for the raffles, sponsoring a hole on the course for $100 or monetary donations.
For more information, or to register a team, contact campwildcats2024@gmail.com.
Woodville Open Golf Benefit
The Woodville Golf Benefit is another fundraiser with the goal of supporting local charities and groups in the community. Last year, over $6,000 was raised and organizers hope to reach that goal again. This year’s benefit will be focused on the youth in our community with the proceeds going to Camp Wildcats, Christmas for Kids and new uniforms for the Woodmore band.
Interested businesses or individuals can sponsor a hole for $100 or donate a prize for the drawings or items for a gift basket.
The event, too, will be a shotgun start at 8 a.m. Saturday, July 27, at Hidden Hills Golf Course. Registration is $75 per participant or $300 per team. Entry fees include a golf cart and lunch. To make a donation, or to register, contact Rich Harman at 419-356-0077.
Adopt a band uniform, or just part of one
Speaking of band uniforms − the Woodmore Band Boosters have begun the process to purchase 65 new uniforms. This is a huge expense as the total cost for all of the parts and pieces is $755 per uniform. To make the new uniforms possible, the Band Boosters are holding two fundraisers.
The first is a uniform adopt-a-thon. Sponsors can “adopt” one or more of the nine parts of a uniform, from a bow tie at a mere $5 to a coat at $185, or any amount of the sponsors choosing. The cost for a full uniform is $755.
The second fundraiser is a raffle. Tickets are $10 each and the drawing will be held July 10. The first draw is for $500 and second for $250. Additional prizes with a $20 value will awarded after the main drawing. To purchase tickets, contact any Woodmore band member and one does not need not be present to win. This summer, Adventure Begins at Your Library
Libraries are planning lots of fun programs and activities for all ages with this year’s Summer Reading Challenge, Adventure Begins at Your Library.
Summer reading programs are designed to encourage children to continue reading during summer vacation in order to retain or improve upon their reading skills. In addition to the reading challenges, the libraries have a variety of programs, including story times, weekly craft activities and much more.
For information about the reading challenge at the Woodville Library and the other branches of Birchard Public Library, visit birchard.beanstack.org. Programs being offered can be found at birchard.org/calendar

Celebration volunteers needed
The 4th of July committee is looking for volunteers to help with this year’s celebration. Muscles are needed for set-up June 29 and tear-down July 7. Help also is needed during the celebration in the bingo tent, Big Six, raffle stand, and in the beer tent. If you have friends and family, or a club, group, organization or business that would like to work a shift together, that can be arranged. The celebration will run July 3 to July 6.
To volunteer, send an email to woodville4th@gmail.com or contact the committee via Facebook at @Woodville4th.
