T-Birds expand lead through 36 holes at Golf Canada Championship – University of British Columbia Athletics

SUDBURY, Ont. – Another strong day for blue and gold saw the UBC Thunderbirds increase their team leads at the 2024 Golf Canada Canadian University Championship in Sudbury. Through 36 holes, the T-Birds women sit atop the leaderboard with a 27 stroke gap ahead of second place UBC Okanagan while the men have increased their lead to 33 strokes ahead of the Montreal Carabins.

Third year T-Bird Una Chou shot a five-under 67 at the Idylwyld Golf and Country Club on Tuesday, the lowest round of the week out of any of the 51 women competing, and just the second sub-par score as teammate Jessica Ng fired a one-under 71. Chou’s two-day total of 140 is good for a six stroke individual lead ahead of fellow Thunderbird Grace Bell who shot a second round of 74.

Ng improved her opening round score by eight strokes on the strength of a bogey-free front nine that included an eagle on the par-4 second hole.

Bo Brown’s five-over 77 has the third-year from Mississauga tied for fourth overall along with Ng as all four T-Bird women competing in Sudbury find themselves among the top five golfers heading into moving day at the four-day tournament.

The UBC men’s squad held a 20-stroke advantage heading into the second round Tuesday and expanded that lead thanks in part to Aidan Schumer who fired the low round of the day once again, posting a six-under 66. On the heels of his opening round 67, the third-year T-Bird holds a five stroke advantage over teammate John Paul Kahlert for the individual lead. Schumer’s day started with a bang when he eagled the first hole.

Kahlert repeated his opening round with another three-under 69 on Tuesday which included an eagle on the par five eighth.

Dylan MacDonald and Mackenzie Bickell completed second rounds of 72 and 73, respectively, as the scoring four for UBC finished the day a collective eight under.

Hudson LaFayette also shot a one-over 73 Tuesday for a share of eighth overall.

The 2024 Golf Canada Canadian University Championship continues with round three Wednesday as the T-Bird women have put themselves in strong position to win a seventh straight title while the men continue to hunt down their second in the last three years.
