Summer jobs made possible through federal program – Windsor News Today
Over 600 students in Windsor and Tecumseh are heading to work every day thanks to the Canada Summer Jobs program.
This year, the program provided $2.2 million to many local small businesses and not-for-profits to hire students over the summer.
“It’s not just young people getting incredible skills, it’s young people getting money in their pocket, but it’s local businesses and local organizations that get the skills and the workforce that they need,” said Windsor-Tecumseh MP Irek Kusmierczyk.
Through the program, the government covers 100 per cent of wages for not-for-profits and 50 per cent of wages for small businesses with fewer than 50 employees.
“We would struggle to survive without the students,” said Lori Newton, Bike Windsor Essex Executive Director. “The services we provide to the county, without the students to run it and without this funding, I just don’t know how we would make it.”
There are still some positions open on the Canada Job Bank website.
The employers for this season have already been selected. The application for Summer Jobs Program funding opens in the winter.
