Sudbury, Ont., police dog ingested fentanyl at crime scene

A Sudbury dog who is a member of the police canine unit accidentally ingested fentanyl Friday during a drug bust in the city.

K9 Roy was quickly rushed to the veterinarian and is expected to make a full recovery, police said.

Four people were arrested in the police operation by the city’s drug enforcement unit, in which police seized 68 grams of fentanyl, 4.5 grams of cocaine, around $8,000 in cash and a large amount of counterfeit American money.

“The estimated street value of the seized drugs is approximately $7,000,” police said in a news release Friday, of the Burton Avenue drug bust.

“During the execution of the search warrant, K9 Roy ingested fentanyl while searching a room. His handler immediately administered Narcan and rushed him to the veterinarian where he underwent precautionary tests.”

Thanks to the quick action to save his life, Roy is “expected to make a full recovery,” police said.

“This is a stark reminder of the dangers our officers and canines face while protecting our community.”

Four people have been charged in the case, ages 38, 34, 33 and 18. They are charged with trafficking and possession of property obtained by crime.

They were scheduled to be in bail court Friday.
