Successful startup season for Humboldt Minor Basketball Association
The inaugural season of the Humboldt Minor Basketball Association (HMBA) saw it’s spring run through with much success. Over 100 young hoopsters got involved in the grades one through six program, which opened the door for new opportunities and, most certainly, a second season.
Kerri Archibald is one of the organizers, and she joined DiscoverHumboldt.com for a recap.
“We were able to run a U13 boys, U15 boys, U15 girls and U17 girls all on the club model. It was really successful, and we had a lot of kids playing basketball in Humboldt this spring.”
During the season, the grade three to six group attended a junior tournament in Melfort and there are plans to host a similar tournament in Humboldt next season.
At the season’s close the HMBA kids had the opportunity to attend a Saskatchewan Rattlers professional basketball game in Saskatoon. The young players got some on floor time and an autograph session with the team.
There are summer camps in the works. Paige Crozon, local 3×3 basketball hero, will be freshly back from the Olympics and leading one of the camps at the Humboldt Public School, says Archibald. In late October, a camp featuring Paul Humbert of Basketball Saskatchewan will take place as a combined basketball camp and coaches’ clinic.
“The kids learned a lot and really did well in their tournaments,” says Archibald. “I’m really thankful for all the volunteer coaches that allowed it to be possible.”
A special shout out to major donors, the Grieman and Wuchner families, as well as support from Canadian Tire and Sobeys.
The action continues with camps this summer and fall, and when the winter snow wanes next spring, it will be back on the courts with another full season of Humboldt Minor Basketball Association action.
