With a tropical cyclone bringing significant rainfall to parts of Texas, it’s crucial to review your emergency plans and ensure your emergency kit is well-stocked. Procrastination is common, but with severe weather on the horizon, now is the time to act.

Step One: Establish an Emergency Plan An emergency plan is a guide for you and your family in the event of a weather emergency, such as flooding. Consider these steps:

  • Stay Informed: Monitor local media outlets for updates. Utilize multiple methods, including phone, radio, and TV.
  • Emergency Kit: Know the location of your emergency kit and verify it contains all essentials for living without power or evacuating for several days.
  • Evacuation Route: Identify the route to the nearest highway leading away from the coast.
  • Home Protection: If a hurricane approaches, prepare sandbags for flood prevention and board up windows.

Step Two: Stock Your Emergency Kit Your emergency kit should include:

  • Water: One gallon per person, per day, for at least three days.
  • Food: A three-day supply of non-perishable items.
  • Radio: A battery-powered or hand-crank radio.
  • Lighting: Flashlights and extra batteries.
  • Charging Devices: Cell phone chargers and backup portable chargers.
  • First Aid: A well-stocked first aid kit.
  • Medications: Any required prescriptions.
  • Tools: A multi-purpose tool.
  • Hygiene: Personal hygiene items.
  • Documents: Copies of personal documents and emergency contact information.
  • Cash: Extra cash in small denominations.
  • Clothing: Blankets and additional clothing.

A well-prepared kit ensures access to basic necessities during a weather disaster. Power outages and medical emergencies are common, so being prepared is key.
