Seacoast roundup: Winnacunnet boys tennis advance, Oyster River girls lax pulls off upset

WINDHAM – It has been 25 years since the Winnacunnet High School boys tennis team played in its lone state championship match.

The sixth-seeded Cinderella Warriors continued their match through their Division II tournament and will play in a state championship for just the second time in program history thanks to a 6-3 win over No. 2 Windham on Tuesday.

“I am super proud of all these young men,” Winnacunnet first-year head coach Brian Beck said. “Getting to see them develop and improve their tennis skills this season has been amazing. It was great to see everyone contributing against such a strong team like Windham.”

The Warriors, who beat No. 3 Bow in the quarterfinals, will face top-seeded Lebanon on Thursday in the championship. Winnacunnet lost to Lebanon, 8-1 in the penultimate match of the regular season.

“We’re going to go out and have fun,” Beck said. “The hope is for everyone to have their best game of our season.”

Against Windham, Chris Berry (No. 1, 9-8), Luke McLaughlin (No. 3, 8-5), Greyson Beliveau (No. 4, 8-5), and Drew Berry (No. 6, 9-7) all won in singles action.

In doubles, AJ McLaughlin and Aidan Beck won 8-3 at No. 2, and Beliveau and Drew Berry won 9-7 at No. 3.

BEDFORD – The Blue Hawks saw their season come to an end in this Division I semifinal.

The closest match of the day for Exeter came at No. 2 doubles as Nick Meyers and Owen Russell lost 8-4.

NORTH SUTTON – Alex Molda won his No. 1 singles match, 8-0, and then teamed with Ryan Whiting to win 8-1 at No. 1 doubles for the Saints in their Division III semifinal loss.

GIRLS TENNIS

No. 2 Souhegan 8

No. 3 Winnacunnet 1

AMHERST – Mia Botnick won her match at No. 2 singles, 8-2, accounting for Winnacunnet’s lone win in this Division II semifinal.

As for his Warriors, Whitmore knows the year was still a success.

“We had a great year, I think we overachieved,” Winnacunnet head coach Paul Whitmore said. “These kids have had a good year, to be No. 3. We’re just not as good as Souhegan, and they proved it on the court.”

MANCHESTER – Katie Turner and Channie Ellis won their No. 2 doubles match, 9-8, accounting for Exeter’s lone win this Division I quarterfinal.

GIRLS LACROSSE

No. 10 Oyster River 16

No. 7 Hollis-Brookline 12

HOLLIS – Grace Royal’s seven goals and one assist led No. 10 Oyster River in this Division II first-round matchup.

The Bobcats will visit No. 2 Windham on Thursday in a quarterfinal.

Adeline Dubois added three goals for Oyster River, while Emy Przybylski and Keira Ferris each had two goals and one assist, and Kira Jakobs had one goal and one assist, and Hannah Dunbar had one goal.

Oyster River goalie Eliza Farwell had 11 saves.

Marshwood 13

Thornton Academy 5

SOUTH BERWICK, Maine – Sarah Theriault had five goals and one assist, and Hadley Prewitt had three goals and three assists for Marshwood (7-7) in this Class A game.

Maddy Poitras added three goals and two assists for the Hawks, while Addie Beale had a goal, Eva Hersey had two assists, and Liv Drake had one.

Marshwood goalie Leigh Twohig had 10 saves, and Chloe Walker, Lana Emery, Lila Manter, Kaley Donovan and Nora Dockham all starred defensively.

Traip Academy 7

Wells 4

KITTERY, Maine – Keira Alessi and Keira Durgin each had two goals, and Jacey Johnson, Sarah Carven, and Delia Harley all had one for Traip in this Class C win.

Traip goalie Charlotte Masse had nine saves.

SACO, Maine – Rogan Boisvert had one goal and one assist, and Oliver Reed, Jackson Hamilton, Hayden Demeroto all had one goal for Marshwood in this Class B loss.

Marshwood goalie Luke Dockham had seven saves.

SOFTBALL

York 10

Greely 0

YORK, Maine – Senior McKayla Kortes struck out 11 and allowed one hit over five innings, leading York (16-0) to this Class B South win.

Freshman Sarah Orso had three hits and four RBIs for the Wildcats, while Lindsay Rivers had three hits and Maddie Fitzgerald, Nya Avery, Emily Estes all had two hits, and Ella Hickey, Ava Brent and Ella Moores all had one.
