Rybakina through to Wimbledon quarter-finals after Kalinskaya retirement
Kazakh Elena Rybakina, the No 4 seed, reached the last 8 of Wimbledon when Russian Anna Kalinskaya, the No 17 seed, retired on Monday afternoon at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in London.
Rybakina, ranked No 4, led 6-3, 3-0 when Kalinskaya, ranked No 18, pulled out.
Rybakina – the only player remaining in the women’s singles draw to have reached a Wimbledon final – is now the third woman this year to have ten wins over opponents ranked in the Top 20.
The Kazakh will face the winner of the match between Ukrainian Elina Svitolina, the No 21 seed, and Chinese Xinyu Wang next.
In the previous rounds of The Championships, Elena Rybakina won against Romanian qualifier Elena-Gabriela Ruse (6-3, 6-1), German Laura Siegemund (6-3, 3-6, 6-3) and Dane wildcard Caroline Wozniacki (6-0, 6-1).
The Russian beat Hungarian qualifier Panna Udvardy (6-3, 6-2), Marie Bouzkova (6-4, 6-1) and No 15 seed Liudmila Samsonova (7-6 (4), 6-2) earlier in the tournament.
