Harper Creek’s Mia Helbing makes a run at state tennis tourney; Beavers’ Joe Mario advances to golf finals

KALAMAZOO — Harper Creek’s Mia Helbing went from being unseeded to advancing to the state semifinals Saturday at the Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 3 state tennis championships in Kalamazoo.

At No. 1 singles, Helbing defeated Hamilton’s Isabelle Troost in the first round, 6-2, 6-0, and then knocked off third-seeded Natalie Poortenga of Grand Rapids Christian, 6-4, 6-1, in the second round. From there, the Beavers’ Helbing earned her second upset win of the tournament by beating sixth-seeded Lily Low of Bloomfiled Hills Marian, 5-7, 6-0, 6-2, to advance to the state semifinals.

No. 2 seed Lilah Zaskowski of Ada Forest Hills Eastern beat Helbing, 6-3, 6-4 in the No. 1 singles final four.

Harper Creek had its No. 1 doubles team in the state tournament as well as the team of Addison Woodruff/Elena Sandel earned a win in the first round before falling in the second round.

Also at the Division 3 tournament, Pennfield’s Vivian Burns faced No. 8 seed Sienna Ilitch of Cranbrook Kingswood in the first round at No. 1 singles and lost, 6-3, 6-2.

Lakeview advanced as a team to the Division 1 state finals in Midland. Earning wins for the Spartans were Maddy Simonds at No. 1 singles (first round), Sade Blackwell (second round after a bye) at No. 2 singles, KaiLani Etheridge/Karlee Gutsue at No. 2 doubles (first round).

Golf Regionals

Harper Creek’s Joey Mario will be playing in the MHSAA Division 2 state golf finals after qualifying as an individual in regional play. Mario carded a 77 at a Division 2 regional at Bedford Valley Golf Course and is the lone player from Harper Creek to advance. The Beavers had 325 as a team to finish sixth in the regional as Colton Beard had a round of 80.

At the same site, Gull Lake was regional champ with a team round of 302. Gull Lake sophomore Maxwell Vandermolen was match medalist with a 70 to finish first overall.

Marshall finished eighth as a team with a round of 332 with Clark Erwin leading the Redhawks with an 82 and Kayden Granger finishing with an 83. Pennfield was led by Nolan Badger with a 99.

In a Division 1 regional in Muskegon, Lakeview took 18th as a team. Eric Ryan had a 92 with Klay Helner a 94 as the Spartans finished with a team score of 396.
