The Indian men’s cricket team will play its first match in the ongoing ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 on Wednesday (June 5). India’s Group A match against Ireland is scheduled to take place at Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York. Rohit Sharma will lead the world No. 1 T20I team in the ongoing tournament, which is taking place in the West Indies and the USA. During India’s tournament’s opener, Rohit will create history by becoming the first cricketer in the world to play in all nine editions of the T20 World Cup.
The 37-year-old Rohit made his T20 World Cup debut for India against England in Durban on September 19, 2007, and got a chance to bat for the first time on September 20, 2007, against South Africa. In the match against the Proteas, Rohit scored an unbeaten 50 and helped India qualify for the semifinals. He amassed a total of 30 runs from 16 balls against Pakistan in the final of the 2007 T20 World Cup to play a big role in the Men in Blue’s title win.
Rohit played in all five matches of the 2009 T20 World Cup in England and scored 52 not out in the second match against India’s Wednesday’s opponent, Ireland. In the 2010 T20 World Cup played in the West Indies, Rohit amassed a total of 84 runs in two innings, which included 79 not out against Australia in Bridgetown on May 7, 2010.
In the 2012 edition of the shortest format megaevent played in Sri Lanka, Rohit got a chance to bat in four matches, and he scored 82 runs. The Mumbai-based cricketer, who has scored 3974 runs in 151 T20Is played so far, kicked off his campaign in the 2014 T20 World Cup by scoring fifties in the first two matches against the West Indies (62*) and Bangladesh (56). He played a big role in India’s place in the final but was unable to become the T20 World Cup winner for the second time.
In the next three editions of the T20 World Cup, Rohit scored 88 runs (2016), 174 runs (2021), and 116 runs (2022) for India.
