Rohan Bopanna, Sumit Nagal secure Paris 2024 Olympics quotas for India in tennis

Rohan Bopanna and Sumit Nagal secured Paris 2024 Olympics quotas for India in tennis through their ATP Rankings in doubles and singles, respectively.

The tennis qualification window for Paris 2024 ended on Monday.

World No. 4 Bopanna, who has been in the top 10 of the doubles rankings since November last year, was expected to obtain the quota for India comfortably.

Nagal, meanwhile, made the cut off after gaining 18 places in the singles rankings since last week.

Nagal was 95th in the tennis rankings last week but he reached a career-high of 77th following his ATP Challenger title win at the Heilbronn Neckarcup in Germany on Sunday.

The men’s and women’s singles events at Paris 2024 will feature 64 players each. The top 56 eligible men’s singles players as per ATP rankings released on June 10 obtained quotas for their countries. However, each country can obtain a maximum of four quotas.

Meanwhile, France had one quota spot reserved as the host country in the event that none of the French singles players managed to secure a direct berth through rankings.

However, with the hosts managing their full allotment of four quotas in men’s singles through the ATP Rankings, the host country quota was added back to the pool, which brought the cut-off up to 57 from 56.

Though Nagal is 77th in the rankings, he occupies the last spot among the eligible players who obtained quotas through world rankings.

Nagal, who represented India at the Tokyo Olympics, was 138th in the rankings in January but has been in exceptional form since then. The Indian tennis player broke into the top 100 for the first time after winning the Chennai Open earlier this year.

For Olympic tennis, National Olympic Committees (NOCs) will have to confirm that they will use the quota places by June 19.
