RNC Officer Struck in the Head While Questioning Assault Suspect

An RNC officer suffered head injuries while responding to a call in the capital city Friday evening.

Police say the female officer was questioning a suspect in connection with an assault investigation when she was hit in the head with what was only described as a “hard object.”

It happened around 8:30 p.m. at a home in the centre of St. John’s.

The 36-year-old female suspect was arrested on the spot for the original assault as well as the alleged attack on the officer. She was held overnight in the lockup for a court appearance today.

The officer was treated for her injuries which were not believed to be serious.

Meanwhile, the RNC nabbed two suspected impaired drivers over the supper hour yesterday, thanks to tips from the public.

The first driver was pulled over just after 5 p.m. in the area of Topsail Road in Mount Pearl.

The 64-year-old female driver blew the breathalyzer and was subsequently issued a seven-day driving suspension, and her vehicle was impounded.

About a half hour later, police stopped a car on nearby Blackmarsh Road.

The 48-year-old man behind the wheel was taken to RNC headquarters and charged with failing the breathalyzer and impaired driving. His vehicle was also seized and he was released pending a future court date.
