Revitalized Burton shopping center to add Five Below store

BURTON, MI – A store where people can buy various items under $5 is coming to Burton.

Five Below, an American chain of discount stores that primarily sells products priced at $5 or below, has plans to move into 4155 E. Court St. at The Courtyard Shopping Center.

Amber Abbey, Deputy DPW Director in charge of zoning for Burton, confirmed Five Below is in the works, although an opening date is unclear.

Five Below received administrative approval from the city, which did not require any action from the planning commission.

An administrative site plan review, rather than a normal site plan review, is required whenever there is a change of ownership, or change of use within the parameters of a permitted use within that zoning district when exterior construction is not being done, Abbey said.

The previous use was retail and this use is retail.

A request for comment by MLive-The Flint Journal from Five Below wasn’t immediately returned.

Five Below sells items such as toys, games, clothes, home decor, party supplies, candy and snacks.

Big chain stores have been making their way into the city of late.

Ross Dress for Less recently opened at 4190 E. Court St. inside the former Staples in one of the outbuildings at Courtland Center mall.

Founded in 1982, Ross Dress for Less markets itself with “extraordinary savings” and do not have window displays, mannequins, fancy fixtures or decorations in its stores to provide more savings to customers, according to the company’s website.

Craft retailer Michaels recently opened in the Courtyard shopping center across from Ross, on the north side of East Court Street.

The new Michaels location store is next door to Big Lots and Media Reload in the shopping center that includes Home Depot, Empire Wok, Sally Beauty Supply, and the Greater Flint Scout Shop.

Harbor Freight also opened recently in the shopping center.

The California-based tool store chain is located in the Courtyard Shopping Center inside the former VG’s Grocery that closed more than a decade ago.

Large companies moving into brick-and-mortar stores is a sign of things to come, Abbey said.

“We’re getting vacant spaces occupied more in the last couple of years. I think this is the turn from Covid,” she previously said. “We do have vacant spaces and it’s ideal for a business looking to fill an existing business versus building a new one. We don’t have a lot of vacant properties for new construction like you might see in Davison.”
