Report: Louis Albertrani, trainer of Artax, dies at 67

Louis Albertrani, best known for training champion sprinter and 1999 Breeders’ Cup Sprint winner Artax, has died at the age of 67.
Albertrani’s death from an apparent heart attack was reported Monday by David Grening of Daily Racing Form. Albertrani was the older brother of retired Grade 1-winning trainer Tom Albertrani.
In a training career that ran from 1992 through 2021, Louis Albertrani amassed a 1,654: 133-161-191 record with $5,202,365 in earnings. His top earner during that career was four-time graded-stakes winner Artax, a millionaire who was also the lone graded winner of his career. In addition to the Breeders’ Cup Sprint, Artax also won the Vosburgh (G1), Carter (G1) and Forest Hills Handicap (G1), all in 1999.
Other leading horses Albertrani trained during his career include Grade 2-placed Aristotle and Grade 3-placed Honor the Fleet and stakes winners Concealed City and Trevelyan.
After retiring from training, Albertrani worked as a placing and patrol judge at Parx. He also worked in the racing office there.
