Real Madrid’s league, Copa del Rey and Super Cup treble in basketball

Real Madrid rounded off a great season by winning three trophies: the 37th League, the 29th Copa del Rey and the 10th Super Cup. Our team broke its record for the number of wins in a season with 72 victories from 86 games. An incredible campaign started and ended at the Palacio de los Deportes in Murcia, where we won our first and third trophies.

The season got off to a winning start with victory in the Super Cup, played between 16 and 17 September 2023 at the Palacio de Deportes in Murcia. Our third league, Copa del Rey and Super Cup treble was forged there, having previously achieved it in 1984/85 and 2014/15. Chus Mateo‘s side beat Barcelona in the semi-finals (80-90) and Unicaja in the final (81-88). Campazzo was named MVP of the tournament.

The Endesa League started with a run of 9 consecutive wins. Following a Regular Season in which they were in first place most of the campaign, they finished second after a tough battle with Unicaja Malaga. Campazzo was named MVP of the competition. The best was yet to come. Chus Mateo’s team was flawless in the playoffs. They won every single play-off match. Against Gran Canaria in the quarterfinals (2-0), in the semifinals against Barcelona (3-0) and the final against UCAM Murcia (3-0). They ended undefeated, a feat they had not accomplished since the 1985/86 season. It was Musa who emerged as the best player in the final. Another MVP for the madridistas.

Real Madrid reign once again in the Copa del Rey
Qualifying as the first-placed team for the Copa del Rey, which took place in Malaga from 15 to 18 February, our team returned to the scene of the last Copa del Rey win and wanted to repeat the feat. They beat UCAM Murcia in the quarter-finals (84-79), Valencia Basket in the semi-finals (95-76) and Barcelona in the final (96-85). Campazzo was named MVP of the tournament, making it three for the Argentinean over the course of the season (Spanish Super Cup, Copa del Rey and Regular Season).

Historic win on Doncic’s return
One of the moments of the season came in mid-October. On the 10th of October, Luka Doncic’s Dallas Mavericks came to the WiZink Center to take on Real Madrid in a friendly match. Our team came from behind in the last five minutes to beat an NBA team for the second time in a row (127-123).

The best send-off to a legend
Another of the images of the season was still to come in the second game of the Endesa League final, which was won thanks to a superb performance by Rudy Fernández. The forward played his last game at the WiZinK Center with the fans bidding him a fitting farewell. After being replaced with 1:35 to go, the Palacio rose to its feet and gave him a standing ovation that lasted more than 15 minutes. A tribute to one of the greatest players in the history of basketball.

Record-breaking Euroleague campaign
Madrid’s spectacular Euroleague, in which they were finalists, is also worth a mention. Dominating the Regular Season, they set the best first round (16 wins) and beat the record number of wins in this phase (27). They also gave us an unforgettable win on Epiphany Day against Anadolu Efes, ending after four overtimes (130-126). With 40 points and 45 PIR, Musa put in Madrid’s best performance in the Euroleague.
