Raducanu building form with breakthrough run on grass – Eurosport
Emma Raducanu is intent on surfing the wave of momentum after booking her place in the quarter-finals of the LTA’s Rothesay Open in Nottingham in emphatic style.
The British No.6 was in fine form as she saw off former Junior Wimbledon champion Daria Snigur, from Ukraine, 6-2 6-2.
That secured a first WTA quarter-final on grass for Raducanu, who fought back from 2-0 down in the first set, winning six straight games to get on her way.
And the 2021 US Open champion is desperate to make the most of this form as she bids for a place in the last four.
She said: “Tennis is a game of momentum and you have to capitalise when you are feeling the run, whether that is games in a row, matches in a row or tournaments in a row, because wins and games are really hard to come by.
“When you are up, you have to stay on it. You almost have a feeling that something is going to go wrong but you have to shut that one out and go with the tactics and do whatever you can to get your nose ahead.”
Snigur, 22, was a standout performer at junior level, including that success at SW19, with Raducanu, 21, having seen what she can do up close.
And given her intimate knowledge of Snigur’s strengths, she came into the match knowing she would need to find her best form to progress.
She added: “It was an extremely tricky match. I knew from before I came on that I needed to be on it. Daria is a really good player, and a really good grass court player especially.
“She won Junior Wimbledon, I played with her in the juniors growing up, so I know how tricky she can be to play and how unorthodox she is. It’s really difficult but I’m happy with how I managed, especially after the beginning, to come through.”
With this victory, Raducanu joins British No.1 Katie Boulter in the last eight of the tournament.
And after thriving in front of the fervent Nottingham crowd, she is hopeful that the British contingent can keep impressing the home support.
She added: “It was incredible, I could hear the support and feel it. It was really nice, it’s our turf, so we’re here, this is the Brits, not just me, we’re doing pretty well in this tournament. We’re trying to take the title home, one of us!”
