Racing fans fume at ‘terrible decision’ by ITV as Royal Ascot replaced by Euros
RACING fans are up in arms after ITV replaced their Royal Ascot coverage with a Euro 2024 match.
The broadcaster had aired the first few races of the day live.
But just before 2pm ITV ended their coverage from Ascot in favour of a clash from Germany.
Croatia‘s second game of the Euros against Albania was shown, much to the frustration of fans.
One reacted saying: “Shows the importance you give Royal Ascot, putting it on ITV4 instead of ITV1 for a Euro game not even showing England.”
Another added: “Terrible decision to have #CROALB on ITV1 ahead of
Ascot and the Royal Family Kings procession.
“ITV4 would have done the football. 90 minutes of football. 105 minutes of punditry?”
A third wrote: “Let’s hope ITV relegating Royal Ascot to ITV4, in favour of showing the mighty Albania v Croatia, signals to the racing authorities that something needs to be done about the declining popularity of racing.”
ITV’s Euro 2024 has proved hugely popular after breaking a record for the opening game between Germany and Scotland.
More than ten million viewers tuned in for Germany’s 5-1 win – the highest peak audience of any opening to a major football tournament in a decade.
