Wednesday marked the 32nd day since the last confirmed case of measles was detected in the province, and that case was detected in Montreal. It takes up to 30 days after exposure for measles to be detected.

Overall, there were 23 cases of measles reported in Montreal and all were among people 39 years old and younger. Six of those patients had to be hospitalized for their conditions.

Among the infections, 11 were women, five were children under a year old and no immunocompromised people were infected. A total of 17 were reported as having been infected in the Montreal area, while six of the infections were acquired by people when they travelled outside the country.

Three of the Montrealers infected were health care workers who contracted the virus in a health care setting.

Outside of Montreal there were 28 cases of measles reported provincewide, with 12 in the Montérégie sector, five in Laval, and the rest in the Laurentides, Mauricie—Centre-du-Québec, Lanaudière and Estrie regions.

While the outbreak may be over, public health encourages anyone who suspects experiencing symptoms of measles after travelling to an area where the virus is present to report their conditions to health authorities.
