Potential Delay in New Ferry Launch Sparks Concern for NL Tourism Industry

Marine Atlantic’s uncertainty as to when their brand new vessel will enter service has both government and tourism operators concerned.

The Ala’suinu was supposed to begin sailing the Argentia run June 14, but late last week, Marine Atlantic cast doubt on if the ship would be ready on time due to issues with the lubrication system.\

Hospitality NL says the impact could be “devastating” as many visitors plan to flock to the province during the tourism season. CEO Craig Foley says any delay in getting the ferry up and running could put a damper on an industry that is still trying to rebound from pandemic losses.

Tourism Minister Steve Crocker, who is keeping a very close eye on the status of the Ala’suinu, has requested a meeting with Marine Atlantic and the federal tourism minister.

The Crown corporation is expected to provide an update on the vessel this week.
