Portugal score freak goal seconds after Cristiano Ronaldo rages at teammate
Portugal scored a freak goal after a defensive mishap from Turkey just seconds after Cristiano Ronaldo lost his cool.
Ronaldo fumed at his international teammate Joao Cancelo after failing to feed him through on goal with a pass.
But just moments later, Samet Akaydin passed back to his goalkeeper Altay Bayindir without looking where the Manchester United star was.
The keeper had come out to collect the ball but his defender did not receive the message with his pass trickling over the line despite Bayindir’s best attempts to prevent it.
It saw Ronaldo’s anger turn to elation as Portugal doubled their lead against Turkey after Bernardo Silva had grabbed the opener earlier in the contest.
Former England international Dean Ashton branded the incident a ‘calamity’, stunned at such a mix-up at this level.
Speaking live on talkSPORT, Ashton said: “Oh, no, no, no. What a disaster this is!
“There was a mix-up between Cancelo and Ronaldo and it was a simple pass back but what on earth is Akaydin doing there.
“He just passes it back blind in the end. Doesn’t look that last time. The goalkeeper is out of position, he is trying his best to get back but it is too late.
“What an absolute calamity that is for Turkey.”
The incident all began after Cancelo ran towards goal with only Ronaldo ahead of him.
As the five-time Ballon d’Or winner pointed to where he wanted the ball, Cancelo attempted the pass but failed to find his teammate.
And Ronaldo was not happy, throwing his hands in the air and screaming at Cancelo, who appeared to protest his innocence.
But while that tiff went on, Turkey pressed the self-destruct button as Bayindir and Akaydin got themselves in a muddle.
When the goal was given, both Cancelo and Ronaldo embraced for a moment before the Al Nassr star hit out at him again.
talkSPORT’s very own Adrian Durham saw the moment, saying live on air at half-time: “One of the most amazing things about it is Joao Cancelo had played the wrong through ball and Cristiano Ronaldo was going crazy until he saw that the ball was going in.
“But if you watch the celebrations afterwards, Ronaldo goes in again and has a pop at Cancelo.
“Others are consoling Cancelo, others are like ‘come on mate, we’ve just scored’. But this is one of the things with Ronaldo.
“As brilliant as he has been, iconic as he is and still giving to the team, for his club and country, it is all about him and that is one of the issues people have with him.”
