Outdoor Fire Ban Lifted on the Island, Restrictions Remain in Labrador

The outdoor fire ban imposed last week because of the forest fire situation in Labrador has been lifted on the island. The ban remains in place in Labrador.

That doesn’t mean a free-for-all though. Setting of a fire within 300 metres of forest land is prohibited, and fires are permitted only in wood burning units that are made entirely of non-combustible materials, are screened, and completely contain the fire.

The ban does not apply to a fire set using a gas, kerosene, alcohol, propane or charcoal burning unit, provided it is not used within 3.5 metres of any woods, brush or other flammable material.

A Permit to Burn permit is required on the island to burn brush and other materials during Forest Fire Season.

Municipalities were cancelling Canada Day fireworks celebrations this weekend but the lifting of the ban seemingly paves the way for the fireworks to go ahead.
