OpenAI CTO Mira Murati says AI would eliminate some creative jobs, here’s why
Ever since OpenAI introduced its sensational chatbot ChatGPT in November 2022, the most pertinent question has been the impact it would have on jobs. Following ChatGPT, numerous AI chatbots and productivity tools have emerged that could potentially replace humans. OpenAI CTO Mira Murati has now said that AI will certainly eliminate jobs, specifically those that should not have existed in the first place. And, these are mainly creative roles.
Creative jobs came under threat since ChatGPT began taking over tasks that were usually done by humans, similarly DALL-E which could effortlessly create images from natural language prompts have shown how AI can autonomously generate creative outputs. Murati said that the technology can indeed cause job displacements in the creative industry. However, she questioned if these jobs were actually needed. Murati made the statement in an interview by Fortune Magazine.
The OpenAI executive did not reveal what kind of creative jobs are likely to be displaced by AI. Reportedly, her comments were made at a time when the entertainment industry was debating AI’s influence on various aspects of the industry. It needs to be noted that many screenwriters and actors had registered their protest in 2023 over the use of AI in Hollywood.
In fact, many freelance jobs have already been impacted by the surge in AI tools. Ever since ChatGPT and similar tools came to the fore, jobs posted on several freelance sites have dropped drastically. As per a Wall Street Journal report, freelance job posts have been reduced by 21 per cent on sites like Fiverr and Upwork.
Regardless, Murati asserts that AI tools can be a means to become more creative. She said that AI used as a tool for education and creativity will expand our intelligence, creativity, and imagination. According to Murati, the first step is to actually help people understand what these AI systems are capable of and how they can be integrated into workflows. “Anyone in the world, even in the most remote areas, could have access to custom tutoring personalized to the way they think, their cultural background, and their interests,” she said.
Murati also mentioned the incredible promise of advanced AI in healthcare and education as well as potential applications in climate change solutions. This could also mean AI could create new opportunities or change existing ones in these fields. In the same interview, talking about the broader impact of AI, Murati said that it would require a lot of work not just from the companies developing and deploying these technologies, but also from stakeholders like civil society, media, governments, regulators, and the general public.
