One-Time Emergency Benefit Being Made Available to Lab City Evacuees

Households in Labrador City ordered to evacuate because of the wildfires are getting $1,000 in one-time emergency financial assistance from the provincial government.

To access the assistance, people must be registered with the Canadian Red Cross.

That organization will verify a person’s eligibility. People already registered do not need to do so again.

Anyone not registered is being encouraged to contact the Red Cross between now and July 31.

Government says the funds will flow as soon as possible.

Meanwhile, a separate assistance program is being developed for people whose employment has been affected by the situation. More information will be shared when it is available.

Public Safety Minister John Hogan will speak with media at 4 p.m. to talk about the program.

Those who have not yet registered with the Red Cross can do so:

1. via telephone at 1-800-863-6582;

2. online at www.redcross.ca/labradorwildfires; or

3. in-person at E.J. Broomfield Arena, located at 2 Broomfield Street in Happy Valley-Goose Bay.
