A man was taken to hospital with injuries that weren’t critical to his life following a shooting on Thursday afternoon in the city’s southwest community of Woodlands, according to the Calgary police.

Just before 3 p.m., officers received reports of a shooting in the 300 block of Woodside Circle S.W., where a man was found in medical distress upon arrival.

“At this time no suspects are in custody. Police continue to investigate the circumstances that led to the incident,” read a police statement issued shortly after 3:30 p.m.

An alleyway near Woodvale Road S.W. was closed off by police as of 4:15 p.m. following the incident, according to a Postmedia photographer on scene.

‘It was scary’

The caller, who requested to remain anonymous, said he dialled police after hearing six shots in quick succession, followed by screams.

The resident said police arrived at the scene in less than five minutes.

Woodlands resident Cicely Schoen said she also heard gunshots.

“I heard a lot of shots, bang, bang, bang — like lots — and then I heard a car racing down the alley,” said Schoen.

“It was scary, my daughter and I were out in the front yard gardening,” she said.

Schoen couldn’t recall an incident quite as severe.

“It’s generally pretty quiet here — the neighbourhood is great.”

More to come…
