A 26-year-old man is dead after a stolen car crashed near M.E. LaZerte High School Tuesday morning, say Edmonton police.

Major collision officers shut down 144 Avenue between 66 and 68 streets for several hours after the 5 a.m. crash.

Speed was a factor in the fatality in which the car was split in two after striking a pole.

“It’s obviously a very high rate of speed,” said acting Sgt. Jeff Knull, adding investigators believe the car had been stolen less than 20 blocks from the scene.

“It was an unoccupied running vehicle taken early in the morning, fairly close to here.”

Drivers in the area experienced delays, with police encouraging them to find other routes.
