NY Jets: Bill Barnwell ranks Jets offensive skill positions 12th in NFL

I have been posting player rankings by various outlets throughout the offseason. What those really tell us is how good the top end players on the New York Jets are in a vacuum. What that doesn’t say is how the Jets offense looks overall.

Recently though, Bill Barnwell of ESPN released a set of rankings that addresses that to some degree. Specifically, he ranked the position player groups in aggregate for NFL offenses.

As explained by Barnwell, this ranking is based on the following contextual factors:

This is just about running backs, wide receivers and tight ends. In other words, imagine if every set of offensive skill position players got a chance to play with the same average quarterback in an average scheme with average weather, average luck and at an average pace. Who would have the league’s best offense?

This is only about on-field performance during the 2024 season. While I talk a lot about contract value and long-term impacts in evaluating the league, all of that doesn’t matter once the games start. This is strictly considering what each player might do this season, not what will happen years down the line.

So based on these factors, where did Barnwell rank the Jets? The Jets scored fairly welling, coming in at #12.

Within his write, Barnwell noted the star power and great play of running back Breece Hall and wide receiver Garrett Wilson. What seemed to drag their ranking down was that Barnwell was less optimistic about their depth, noting that the Jets have question marks after wide receiver Mike Williams in the pass catching department. About Mike Williams, Barnwell also noted the receiver’s injury risk and the potential for him to offer a ton of value or very little or anything in between, leaving Williams as a bit of a question mark.

Overall, the evaluation seems fair to me. What do you think? Is 12 too high, too low, or just right for the Jets offensive position players?
