The parent company of NTV and radio station OZ-FM has confirmed they were recently the victim of a cyberattack.
“Unfortunately, like many other individuals and companies, the Newfoundland Broadcasting Company Limited experienced a cyber security event recently,” NTV reported on its website.
They say the incident has not affected on-air operations, noting they continue to broadcast.
“Upon discovering this event, we took immediate steps to protect, secure and restore our systems, launched an investigation with outside forensic experts and notified law enforcement,” stated Newfoundland Broadcasting COO Lindsey Andrews. “Based on our findings to date, we have confirmed that the event resulted in unauthorized access to information in parts of our system environment.”
Andrews said the company is also aware that an unauthorized third party plans to post hacked data online, “claiming it is ours.”
“With the assistance of cybersecurity experts, we are working diligently to understand how the information was obtained and what information has been exposed. We have a dedicated internal and external team, but this process will take some time.”
They also say all employees have been notified and “have been offered appropriate support.”
The Play ransomware group has reportedly claimed responsibility for the attack. Its site on the dark web states it stole private data including budget and payroll information, as well as client documents from NTV.
