Novak Djokovic to Travel to Wimbledon 2024, Unsure of Status amid Knee Injury Rehab

Novak Djokovic will arrive at Wimbledon on Monday ahead of the tournament’s start on July 1, according to the BBC’s Russell Fuller.

Fuller reported Djokovic’s status for the Grand Slam event remains unclear, though, as he continues his recovery from meniscus surgery.

The 37-year-old gutted out a five-set victory over Francisco Cerundolo in the fourth round of the French Open.

Djokovic called for a medical timeout in the second set and continued to play on. His performance once again left fans at a loss given he fought back from a 2-1 set deficit while being less than 100 percent.

The win was even more impressive in retrospect, when the nature of his injury became clear.

After undergoing surgery, Djokovic said on X he’s “going to do my best to be healthy and fit to return to the court as soon as possible.”

Taylor Fritz tore his meniscus at the 2021 French Open and recovered in time to compete at Wimbledon, so Djokovic wouldn’t be making an unprecedented comeback.

Fritz told reporters he has spoken with the 24-time Grand Slam champion to provide his personal insight on the situation.

“I told him what it was like for me,” he said. “A lot of it comes down to the inflammation and how you react. … You pretty much have your full strength immediately. It’s more just the inflammation from the surgery. As long as you can get that down and start playing without it puffing up again, you’re actually going to be fine to play.”

Djokovic is a seven-time champion at the All England Club and needs one more title to match Roger Federer’s all-time record. He has reached the final in the last five installments and had a four-year winning streak before Carlos Alcaraz dethroned him in the 2023 final.
