No Growth in Lab West Forest Fire as Weather Conditions Continue to be Favourable

Mother Nature is providing much needed relief in Labrador City as crews continue to tackle a wildfire looming roughly 4-6 km from the town.

In an update provided this afternoon, Premier Andrew Furey says the fire is currently ranked as a category one, with resources from this province, New Brunswick and Quebec dousing the blaze.

Furey says the fire has not spread over the past 24 hours and conditions are expected to be favourable over the next couple of days.

Temperatures dropped overnight and remain cooler today, says Furey. The wind pattern has also shifted, meaning the fire is now blowing back onto the itself. There has been some light precipitation over the past 24 hours, with more rain on the way overnight and on Monday.

The federal government is setting up a desk in Happy Valley-Goose Bay to assist evacuees. Furey says they’re working on providing financial compensation for impacted residents.

The premier says they are ironing out the details, but says it will be similar the compensation package offered to residents on the southwest coast impacted by Hurricane Fiona in 2022. More details are expected in the next 24 hours.
